One of our mentors, David Frizzell, a chemist for Bayer Corporation, was working with a company project called “Making Science Make Sense” at Challenge Air. Challenge Air is a program where pilots volunteer their time to take disabled children on flights where some of the lucky children get to control the plane. It was here that David met Ron who is a paraplegic. Ron became inspired, by the scientific demonstrations David was performing, to attempt to solve some of the challenges of life with his disability. One of these problems was the fact that he could not leash and unleash his guide dog, Mead. David decided that this would be a perfect project for our team to tackle.
One night during preseason we met with Ron to see what solutions we could think up. To this day, we are still working with him in order to make simple tasks in his daily life easier for him.
